Their goal is to educate the public on how to navigate the internet responsibly, keep private information away from hackers and maintain up to date security to prevent known threats on your machines. On their site, you can find valuable tips and tricks to keep in mind daily when surfing the internet.

The 8 Best Tips for Staying Safe Online

1.  Passwords should be different for all of your online accounts.

They should contain a mix of letters (capital and lowercase) and numbers. If a website gets hacked, the hackers will not be able to use the same password on other sites. If you are going to take anything away from this article, start taking on this behavior as the top tip.

2.  If you suspect any of your email or other accounts have been hacked, immediately change the account's password.

This will go along way. As a proactive measure, consider signing up for the two-step authentication option offered. This will provide additional assurance that your account will be protected.

3.  Avoid logging into any accounts on public kiosk computers.

Only general browsing is ok. Login with your phone, or wait until you get to your home computer. Kiosks are generally untrusted and have a reputation of being infected.

4.  Don’t click on links through emails that request you to verify your information.

This could be a hacker posing as a company to get access to your personal and account information. Log onto your account from a secure browser and manually type in the URL to update your information.

5.  When purchasing online, use your credit card save the receipt of the purchase (in your email, etc.).

If there are any problems with the order or delivery, your card can get refunded and you have a paper trail to evidence your purchase. Do not use your debit card as it is more difficult to refute those charges taken directly out of your bank account.

6.  Teach your children to be responsible online.

Educate them on what is appropriate to post on social media and what websites to browse. Explain that personal information, like addresses and phone numbers, should not be shared with anyone online. This is a new arena of required education in the digital age.

7.  Any Windows computer that connects to the Internet should have anti-virus software.

This includes Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. If you own a Windows XP machine, you must consider migrating to a newer Windows version asap. Android devices are also known to be as vulnerable as Windows computers and anti-virus is becoming more popular for this platform.

8.  When installing a router at home, make sure to change the name of default wireless network.

Change the vendor's default password and verify remote administration is disabled.

These great tips are just the beginning! If you have any questions or concerns about internet safety, read more on StaySafeOnline.org.
