Veeam Upgrade and Group Policy Permissions
I was performing an upgrade from Veeam 7 to Veeam 8, and ran into an issue after the upgrade seemingly went smoothly.
All services were able to start except for the critical Veeam Backup service. The service would start, then terminate with the standard “The service started then stopped. Some services do this…”. The Windows Event Viewer entry looked like the screenshot below. This is not much help.
A bit more digging, and I found that Veeam 8 is very reliant on Group Policy permissions to be set appropriately for the Backup Files and Directories and Restore Files and Directories. In this particular case, the Veeam Service account was not explicitly added, while others had been. Based off THIS article, this setting either needs to be Not Configured, or must have the Veeam Service account specified. After doing so, everything worked just fine!
The setting is under Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | User Rights Assignment.
